Many people use Google to find answers to everyday questions or even to help make major decisions.

For SIM workers Brooklyn* and Marvin*, an internet search was how they found their place with SIM in cross-cultural ministry.

Brooklyn said, “We both felt we were called to a particular country and had worked there before. Our church here had never sent missionaries, but we felt we were called to a certain community there.”

Their call was clear, but their path became bumpy when a potential receiving church fell through. Brooklyn said, “Marvin and I had a plan for how we would get there … And there was a church in the country to sponsor us that we knew through friends.

“Unfortunately, when it was time to begin what we understood to be the fundraising process, that church said they didn’t want to receive us anymore and weren’t interested in sponsoring us. Because we had no missions background, we didn’t know what to do.”

The couple began to skim Google, looking for non-denominational missions. After looking through all available results, Marvin turned to Brooklyn defeated. Then, she pointed out the last blue result – the only one he hadn’t clicked on. It was SIM.

They explored the website and realised they knew someone who served with SIM in Asia. Brooklyn said, “After she had good things to report about the organisation, we filled out the form. A recruiter called us, and the recruiter’s answers to each of our questions confirmed it was the right fit.”

Now, Brooklyn is the director of a non-profit that develops relationships with artisans and makes their products available to a wider market through fair trade.

They have recently opened a shop and have used their missional business to help non-traditional missionaries supplement their funding.

… And all from a simple Google search.
