Spiritual Landscape in Zambia

Christianity is by far the largest religion in Zambia, with more than 90 per cent of the population saying they follow Jesus Christ. There are pockets of Islam and Hinduism, mainly in immigrant communities, and some adherence to traditional religions, sometimes mixed with elements of Christianity.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Children and young people

Young people account for more than a third of the population. They are loved by Jesus and need to be reached and discipled for Christ. Traditionally, the church has not prioritised ministry to children and youth and existing programmes have not brought transformational growth. Given the opportunity, they can impact their families and culture for His kingdom.

University students

Most university students have been exposed to Christianity but struggle to understand their faith and grow in their walk with God. At university, they are heavily influenced by secular education and educators when they are exploring new opportunities and ideologies. Therefore, discipleship and mentoring are vital.

Please pray

  • For wisdom, unity and harmony as new workers come into key positions of personnel and treasury in SIM Zambia
  • For the youth centre staff and the secondary school chaplain to have a life of integrity, grow deeper in their faith, and be a light to the community
  • For our health workers – for wisdom, protection, stamina and supplies. Pray for the physical and spiritual needs of their patients
  • For our community development ministry, teaching farmers to grow food for their families and impact their lives spiritually. Farming is now being affected by the drought and shortage of food and sharp price rises, leading to malnutrition. Pray for rain
  • For our disciple-making and leadership training ministries with local churches, Bible colleges and university campuses to equip and mentor youth leaders from local churches to disciple others
  • For those who minister to children in school, churches and community, that lives would be changed for eternity, that leaders being developed in churches would grow in their faith and to share the gospel to those around them
