SIM Indonesia

Our SIM Indonesia team envision Indonesian churches and ministries bringing Indonesians into the grace of God, discipling them and mobilising them to cross barriers and reach communities where he is least known, both in Indonesia and beyond, for God’s honour and glory.

Key Ministries

  • Helping churches and ministries to incorporate discipleship into their DNA and in all they do, which includes integrating discipleship into existing activities.
  • Mobilising theological institutions and students for mission.
  • Creating mission awareness and cross-cultural equipping of pastors and church members.
  • Partnering with local churches in equipping and sending workers to serve among the unreached within Indonesia and beyond.
  • Forming meaningful partnerships with churches and ministries that help to meet their felt needs.
  • Exploring missional business opportunities.
  • Teaching English as a Second Language (seeking effective avenues and manpower to start).

Spiritual Landscape in Indonesia

The world’s largest population of Muslims live in Indonesia, where many large communities of people still do not have a gospel witness. Christianity is a minority religion, and evangelical Christianity makes up only a very small percentage of believers.

There are 239 people groups who are living and dying without any knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Sundanese

Sunda is the largest ethnic group living and dying without Christ. Most of the 38 million Sundanese live in West Java but are also found on several other islands. The majority of Sunda still live in villages, where most are tenant farmers. Small communities are displaced on other islands, some in very squalid conditions such as rubbish dumps. Workers in these communities are providing non-formal schooling to the children.

Sundanese are known for their kindness and believe that having the Sundanese character is the best path of life. Although they look happy on the outside, Sundanese are dominated by fear and shame. They are attracted to the experience of authentic love, even if that love is from a Christian. Many among them are open to the gospel, but there is no large movement to Christ.

Discipling Sunda believers is very difficult. New converts face intense psychological pressure to return to their former religion, first from family and then from the wider community.

Please pray

  • For people of integrity to help SIM Indonesia be registered as a legal entity and lead SIM Indonesia into the future
  • For grace and wisdom to mobilise the Indonesian church for missions
  • For revival in Indonesia’s 72,000 churches; many do not have a vision for mission; some are nominal churches. Evangelicals are only 3.2 per cent of Indonesia’s 280 million population.
  • For grace and discernment to identify candidates with a mission call to serve in Indonesia and beyond
  • For Indonesia’s 548 people groups that have heard the gospel to grow spiritually as disciples of Jesus
  • For Indonesian churches to be burdened to share the gospel with Indonesia’s 239 people groups who are living and dying without Christ
  • For continued unity, direction and collaboration for several Indonesian networks that are seeking to mobilise churches for cross-cultural outreach, both within Indonesia and overseas
  • For wisdom, joy and perseverance for SIM Indonesia’s workers
  • For Sundanese to come to the light, confess their sins, and be cleansed from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus
  • there are very few churches among the Sundanese. More workers are needed to reach this people group
