Linda has served in Grootfontein, a small city in the north of Namibia, for more than 26 years. She is originally from South Africa and serves with SIM Namibia. When asked about her “ministry”, she simply says, “I don’t have a life and a ministry. My life and my ministry is me. My life is to bring Christ. All these things I do are just a doorway into a community.”
That outlook guides everything she does. Whether she is serving meals at a soup kitchen, teaching sewing skills, counselling children, praying with someone in a supermarket aisle or collecting food for families in need, Linda sees each moment as an opportunity to point someone to Jesus.
“My first priority is always to share the gospel in some way,” she says. “As I build relationships with people, I can actually speak into their lives.”
Those relationships have grown over decades. Former schoolchildren stop her in the street to thank her for the meals that helped them through school and children arrive at her gate asking for prayer.
“Suddenly there’s hope. If they leave school with a skill, they have the potential to change not only their own lives, but the lives of their whole household.”
Galius is one of those children. Linda supported him throughout his school years, helping with food, clothes, school supplies and encouragement. For a time he lived with distant relatives, but by Grade 8 he was at a very low point and arrived at Linda’s gate considering suicide. That moment became the beginning of Linda walking closely with him. During his school years, her local church gave Galius a small Sunday job opening and closing windows, helping him earn a little income and giving him a sense of belonging within a church family. After finishing school, a local pastor offered him a place to stay alongside other boys in similar circumstances, an example of how the church supported him together.
Later, she helped him access computer training before an opportunity through the German Red Cross allowed him to move overseas. He is now preparing for a career in the hotel industry; a journey Linda describes as the result of someone choosing to walk alongside him. Linda continues to look for new ways to serve her community, especially children living in the nearby informal settlement, where unemployment is high and many families rely on a single income.
Please pray
- For Linda’s strength and discernment as she continues to serve the Grootfontein community. Pray that God would keep opening her eyes to the needs around her and sustain her as she walks with so many children and families.
- For the sewing classroom at Omulunga Primary School, especially the children learning new skills and the two San Bushman women who help teach. Ask that these practical abilities would bring confidence and new opportunities for their households.
- For Galius, as he continues his hotel management studies in Germany. Pray that God would guide him and provide supportive relationships around him.
