By Tim Allan, SIM International
Dave* had always dreamt of one day becoming a teacher and a sports coach, just like his dad.
Growing up in the US, and playing American Football at high school, he had seen the joy his father had in his job. As he got older, his dream grew ever stronger and it was no surprise when he did a teaching degree at college.
But little did he know that his dream would take him halfway round the world to the Middle East, which is where he now lives and works in exactly the job he had always planned – but also sharing the love of Jesus in his community.
Now a father of three himself, Dave said: “It’s amazing how God has worked things out for me. When I went to college, I met some people from the Middle East and ended up coming to serve in a church here.
“He had pretty much turned his back on his faith but, over time, we were able to talk things through and he started to re-connect.”
“That was where I met my wife, who was already serving with SIM. After we got married, things got interrupted by Covid, but we were eventually able to come back and now we are raising our family here.”
Dave serves in an international school, where he teaches several subjects to kids aged from 12 to 18. No two days are ever the same!
He said: “My normal routine is to get up around 6am and leave the house with my son around 6.40am to get him to school.
“I start work around 8am and school finishes at 3pm, but it’s full-on during that time. I teach two or three different subjects to two or three different age groups, in classes of around 25. I’m experienced enough now to take most of it in my stride, but we are just pouring out like a fire hydrant all day!”
He is home by around 4.15pm, where he throws himself into family life before the children go to bed. It is then that he can indulge his other passions – talking about the Bible and coaching American Football. Usually, those are separate activities but just occasionally they go hand in hand.
He said: “I was surprised at how much interest there is here in American Football. At times, we’ve even had enough teams to run a League, but even without we get a good group of guys in their 20s and 30s who want to come and train.
“We sometimes have sessions twice a week, sometimes less frequently, and we just operate like a regular team back home, working on fitness and technical skills.
Please pray
- Dave to remain steadfast and strong as he juggles his many responsibilities at work, on the football pitch, at church and with his family.
- For the guys in the football team to want to know more about Dave and why he coaches as he does.
- For more teachers who love Jesus to go to the Middle East, where so few people know the gospel.
Could God be calling you to serve in the Middle East?
We’d love to help you explore what that could look like.
