Becoming a mission-oriented young adult

At 26, after receiving a calling, I entered mission work and spent six years abroad before returning home to a reality far different from what I had imagined. Everything I had prepared for seemed insufficient. Looking back now, the challenges seem monumental. I often prayed, “Lord, right now, I see nothing.” 

Even so, the proportion of Christian youth actively involved in missions is decreasing sharply. Statistics show that currently only 2% of Generation Z are evangelised, a decline accelerated by the pandemic. 

Young people, however, have a unique advantage: they can take risks and dream without fear. Hebrews 2:28 reminds us, “Young men and women, lift your eyes to the task ahead!” Scripture calls young people to develop a vision for God’s kingdom, and those who trust in Jesus are called to serve with courage even in a world that often discourages them. Believing in God’s plan, they are encouraged to act, knowing He will support them even when the path seems impossible. 

God works in ways beyond human calculation. Lack of resources, time, or skill does not limit Him. He calls individuals to step forward, and through their faithfulness, entire families, communities, and nations can be transformed, bringing glory to God. 

When I first received my call to mission work in Africa, my family had no experience or preparation to support me. Even with prayer, there was no certainty. Yet, following God’s call and trusting in His provision, I began training and preparation. By 1995, I was sent as a missionary to the field, learning local languages and ministry work. By 1997, I was fully engaged in ministry in West Africa, seeing firsthand the fruit of years of prayer and preparation.

Even in the midst of hardship, God provides. Today, while only 2% of youth are reached with the gospel, our efforts are multiplying, with many new opportunities to advance God’s kingdom. For young believers, the challenge is not to abandon their calling when faced with obstacles, but to step forward in faith, trusting that God is at work in the unseen.
