A growing Wolof church and a lasting gospel legacy

SIM has been involved in church planting among the Wolof—one of the world’s least-reached people groups—right in the heart of the city since 2021. We’ve had the privilege of working alongside gospel partners from the national church association and World Venture in a Wolof-speaking church plant.
For decades, we prayed for a Wolof-speaking church in Senegal’s capital. God has graciously answered. What began as a small Bible study has grown into a vibrant fellowship that now meets in a community centre. Because religious authorities in the area would not grant permission for a church building, we were instead granted space for a community centre. But God is using this space in powerful ways.
Each week, an average of 20 believers and seekers gather to worship in Wolof—using culturally familiar expressions that make the gospel feel deeply personal and accessible. The Word of God is central, and the space itself has become sacred ground for many. Worship in Wolof helps remove the feeling of being “foreigners” from those attending, and a sense of belonging has taken root.
The community centre is also a practical blessing. After asking neighbours about their greatest needs, we began offering tutoring for young people aged 16–19. With volunteer teachers from the local community, we now provide extra lessons in French, maths, science, and English, creating opportunities to serve and connect with families while demonstrating Christ’s love in action.
The Power of partnership
This church plant and community centre would not be possible without the collaboration of national leaders and like-minded mission organisations. Being able to work well with gospel partners is vital in Senegal, where unity and humility speak louder than words. We’re grateful for the strong relationships that enable us to walk forward together in ministry.
As our mission workers mentor new mission families, serve in cross-cultural teams, and help grow this fellowship, the legacy of those who translated the Bible into Wolof continues to sustain us. Their translated Scriptures are central to every Bible study, training session, and gospel conversation we have.
We give thanks to God for their faithfulness and for the growing movement of Wolof believers in the city and beyond. The gospel is bearing fruit. The church is growing. And by God’s grace, Senegalese men and women are becoming leaders in His mission.
Please pray
- Give thanks for the new Wolof-speaking church in the city. Pray that the believers and seekers who gather each week will grow in faith, unity, and courage to share the gospel within their communities.
- That the tutoring and community programmes will continue to meet real needs and demonstrate Christ’s love in practical ways.
- For continued harmony among the mission teams, national church leaders and local believers. Ask God to raise up faithful Wolof men and women who will lead and multiply gospel-centred ministries across Senegal.
