SIM Mauritius

By faith, we see competent pastors and leaders rooted in the truth of the Bible as they teach their congregations; vibrant churches reaching out to those living and dying without Christ, both in Mauritius and beyond; and churches growing in communities of migrant labourers.

Key Ministries

  • Discipleship and leadership training in churches.
  • Ministry to children and adolescent girls.
  • Outreach.

Spiritual Landscape in Mauritius

Hinduism is the dominant faith in Mauritius, with around half the population following its tenets. There is a sizeable Christian community, although many of those who say they are Christian are nominal. Islamic communities also exist.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Hindus and Muslims

Hinduism in Mauritius originates from India. Many hierarchical and economic sub-groups exist, with the best known being the Brahmins – the priestly community. The Brahmins form the religious backbone of Hinduism. The Bhojpuris are an ethnic sub-group and make up the majority of Indians in Mauritius.

Muslim communities, too, are proud of their religion and heritage. The same is true of many nominally religious Christian people. Only the gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to break through the religious barriers.

Please pray

  • For unity among the various evangelical church denominations and a common vision for those still needing to hear and understand the good news
  • For the evangelical churches of Mauritius to rise to the challenge of supporting mission work and workers
  • For those attending discipleship and leadership training to grow in their knowledge of God and their faith
  • For new mission workers to join the SIM team, entering the country as businesspeople or university lecturers
  • For mobilisation of mission workers from the Mauritian church
