Joel left Islam and found Jesus thanks to community in South Asia
Raised Muslim in South Asia, Joel* longed to know who God truly was. Through SIM programmes, Christ brought light, joy and deep faith into his life.

Growing up in a Muslim family in South Asia, Joel* lived with questions about who God really was. He once heard the name of Jesus as a child, but the years dimmed that memory. Then, through two SIM programmes that combined learning with discipleship, God broke through his darkness with the light of Christ, filling his life with joy and a faith.
Looking back, Joel now sees that God’s light had been reaching into his life long before he recognised it. When he was around eight years old, he began staying in a Christian hostel run by believers, including his uncle and aunt. There, he first heard stories about Jesus and learned about living in a way that pleases God. Although he only knew the name of Jesus then, those early experiences planted a quiet curiosity in his heart.
“Growing up in a Muslim family in South Asia, Joel lived with questions about who God really was.
Years later, life took Joel away from that environment. At home and during his secondary school years, he no longer had contact with believers or a church. Eventually, when he went to university, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his studies. During this time, he joined a residential training programme that gives young men job skills alongside discipleship. They regularly meet and study the bible together.
Through daily life, study, and conversations with staff and other students, Joel began to remember what he had once heard about Jesus. He said that those childhood memories “came back,” and that he felt “joy and happiness while learning about Him.”
After completing the residential programme, Joel continued to grow through Transformation Northwest Center, another SIM project that combines work experience with mentoring. Here, he continued to learn about Jesus and His call to salvation. The project manager encouraged him to follow Jesus and to consider baptism. Eventually, Joel decided to take this step. Though his baptism was initially delayed due to local disruptions, he was later able to be baptised at one of the local churches connected to the project, a milestone marking the transformation God had been shaping in his life.
Today, Joel speaks openly about the changes God has brought to his life. He says his heart feels new and clean. He finds himself more patient and less quick to anger. Living with Christian roommates who study Scripture together, he now shares about Jesus with his colleagues and even his parents, who are still learning to understand his faith.
Joel’s story shows how God works through long relationships, patient mentors, and Christ-centred communities. Both the residential programme and Transformation Northwest Center have played essential roles, demonstrating how God can use different programmes to nurture and multiply His work in a young believer’s life.

Please pray
- For Joel as he continues to grow in his faith, that God would strengthen his heart and guide his daily decisions.
- For his family, that they would come to understand and embrace his commitment to Jesus.
- For the mentors, coordinators, and programmes (Transformation Northwest Center) that God would continue to use them to nurture young believers.
