For the past five years, Lane Elliott has been serving migrant workers in Alberta and British Columbia with SIM Canada – but that wasn’t where he imagined mission would take him.
After returning to Canada from Mexico in 2015, Lane thought his time as a mission worker might be over. Instead, he has seen more people come to faith among migrant farm workers in his home country than he did in all his years overseas.
This past season, Lane has led several groups of men from southern Mexico through Rey de Gloria (King of Glory), a Spanish-language study that explains the story of the Bible and points clearly to Jesus.
Marcos’s story
At the end of the summer, as the fields quietened and the workers began to return home, only Marcos remained on the farm. Lane wanted to see him once more before he left for Mexico, to find out whether the words they had read together had taken root.
When Lane arrived at Marcos’s lodging, they sat down to talk. Their conversation moved easily from family stories to language quirks, until Marcos mentioned something remarkable: when he had called home, he had been showing his 10-year-old son the King of Glory film on YouTube. Not only that, but he had also spoken to his wife about the Bible passages Lane had explained.
What had begun as a study in Alberta was already being shared with his family back home in Mexico.
Encouraged, Lane asked Marcos the question that had been on his heart, “Have you trusted in Jesus for your salvation?”
Marcos hesitated. He admitted he had been trying to be a better person and avoid sin, but his answers showed he was still hoping his own efforts might be enough.
That opened the door for Lane to explain again what Jesus had accomplished on the cross: how His blood, unlike the sacrifices of old, had truly made people holy and able to stand before God. Lane reminded Marcos that there was only one mediator who can bring us to the Father, Jesus Christ Himself.
Please pray
- For Marcos that the seeds of faith planted this season would grow, and that he would fully trust in Christ.
- For Marcos’s family that as they watch, listen, and learn, they too would come to know Jesus.
- For Lane and his ministry, for continued opportunities to share the gospel with migrant workers, and for God to prepare hearts to receive it.
