SIM UK

Our UK team mobilises people from across the UK and Ireland into global mission. They also receive workers into the UK, most of whom reach out to diaspora communities through local churches.

Key Ministries

  • Mobilisation and Sending
By prayer, SIM UK recruits, prepares and supports  Christians sent by their churches to make disciples of Jesus Christ where He is least known. This includes mentoring and supporting mission workers throughout, from initial enquiry to long-term service.
  • Engage programme
The Engage programme connects cross-cultural gospel workers with UK-based receiving churches to help them reach out to their diverse communities with the love and truth of Christ. Ministry opportunities often arise among diaspora groups and can include sports, language classes, music, and discussion-based outreach. At its core, Engage is about building meaningful partnerships between workers and churches, equipping them to engage more effectively in cross-cultural ministry and mission within the UK.

Spiritual Landscape in the UK

The United Kingdom has a rich Christian heritage, with evidence of Christianity dating back to the 2nd century AD.

Following the legalisation of Christian worship in 313 AD, the faith spread rapidly, becoming dominant by the end of the 4th century.

However, throughout the centuries, the religious landscape has been shaped by political shifts, reformations, and social change.

Today, the UK is marked by increasing secularisation and religious diversity.

According to the 2021 census, 27.5 million people identified as Christian, while 22 million claimed no religion. Other significant religious communities include Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, and Buddhists.

The number of people identifying as Christian continues to decline, down 13% since 2011.

In parallel, there has been a rise in those identifying as ‘spiritual but not religious’, with practices like mindfulness and meditation growing in popularity.

This evolving landscape presents both a challenge and an opportunity for gospel-centred ministry in a post-Christian culture.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

The UK is home to around 65 million people, nearly 10 million of whom were born outside the country. This increasing diversity offers a profound opportunity for churches to engage cross-culturally, often without leaving their own neighbourhoods.

One example is the south Asian community in Manchester, a region in north-west England where Jesus is least known. Through the Engage programme and partnerships with local churches, SIM UK is actively ministering among this group.

At the same time, generational shifts are redefining the spiritual landscape. Seven in ten young people in the UK now identify as having no religion. Yet God is moving among this younger generation – Gen Z and Gen Alpha – many of whom are hungry for purpose and open to exploring faith. SIM UK is developing fresh opportunities to support and disciple young people as they step out in service for Christ.

Please pray

  • For our UK-sent workers to thrive in the environments to which they are called and to be very aware of the support of the UK team
  • For the multi-agency initiative Mission through Business, as it seeks to help more business people see how God might use their gifts and skills to reach the nations. Pray also for SIM UK to serve people effectively on this route into mission
  • For each member of our staff team, that we will discern and trust in God’s purposes.
  • That the Lord will raise up more workers for his harvest field from the UK and Ireland.
