SIM South Africa

SIM’s multi-cultural team has offices in Durban and Cape Town, close to many communities in South Africa who do not know Jesus. They seek to partner with churches to mobilise workers into communities where Christ is least known, both in South Africa and overseas.

Key Ministries

  • Partnership with the church
SIM South Africa works alongside local churches to provide and support gospel workers in communities where Christ is least known. This collaboration seeks to build a witness of Christ’s love through holistic ministry and intentional engagement in areas of deep need.
  • Addressing societal struggles
Ministries also focus on addressing pressing issues such as poverty, homelessness, racial and healthcare discrimination, refugee crises, gender inequality, human trafficking, lack of education, social fragmentation, unemployment, poor infrastructure, income inequality, gender-based violence, safety concerns, mental health, corruption, and challenges in land reform and language diversity.

Spiritual Landscape in South Africa

  • Christian adherents: 77.1% (Evangelical: 21%)
  • Ethnic religions: 12.7%
  • Hindu: 1.3%
  • Muslim: 1.3%
  • Other religions: 6%
  • Non-religious: 1.6%

Christianity is the majority religion in South Africa, though its expression varies widely. Evangelical churches are active and growing, often leading efforts in social justice, reconciliation, and outreach. However, spiritual syncretism and nominalism are prevalent, and there remains a significant need for deep discipleship and holistic transformation.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

  • Ethnolinguistic: Xhosa (Nguni), Portuguese-speaking, South African Indian.
  • Religious: Muslim, Hindu.
  • Social Categorisation: Students (both international and internal migrants); diaspora communities (Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Somalian, East Asian).

Please pray

  • For an awakening among South African churches that do not have a history of sending mission workers. Pray they will have effective service in cross-cultural missions
  • For workers to take the gospel to the least reached, including children, youth, young adults, and Muslims, and to engage in effective ministry amongst them
  • For the churches of South Africa to seek reconciliation and desire multi-cultural congregations
  • For teachers to come alongside churches and schools to train up leaders to have a deeper understanding of the Scriptures
  • For a deeper understanding of God’s word and a spirit of oneness amongst staff, volunteers, and missionaries in SIM
