Spiritual Landscape in Peru

Around 95 per cent of the population identify as Christian, with 76 per cent saying they are Roman Catholics. A significant portion of the population also practices a syncretic faith, blending Catholicism with pre-Columbian beliefs and traditional indigenous practices.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

International prisoners

International men and women are targeted to become drug mules to take cocaine out of Peru. Often, they have come from broken, abusive homes, have mental health issues and struggle with various addictions which make them vulnerable targets. These men and women come from all ages and stages of life, desperate for money and relief from the difficulties of their lives.

Since the prison system in Peru is based on family support for the inmates, foreign prisoners with no local family face hugely difficult language and cultural barriers.

Our ministry, Walking in Liberty, visits the women’s prison to share the message of freedom to the women inside the prison and provide humanitarian support. Currently, our Bible studies inside the prison are conducted in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Malay.

When the women are released from prison, there are ongoing discipleship opportunities offered to them while living in Lima. We also have some ongoing contact with those who have returned to their passport country. We are praying that a men’s prison ministry will be started.

Please pray

  • For our international prisoners’ ministry in Lima, that the ministry would grow and be able to start an outreach to male prisoners
  • For spiritual vitality and supportive communities for our mission workers, as many serve in small, dispersed teams
  • For Peruvians to continue to be sent out to the ends of the earth through SIM Latinoamérica and for God to raise up more sending churches
