SIM North East India

Our SIM North East India team is based in the predominantly Christian region of India and seeks to mobilise workers from churches across seven states.

Key Ministries

  • Partnering with NEI churches in world mission by facilitating the sending of mission workers to communities where Christ is least known.
  • Mobilising churches across seven states: Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, to raise funds and send mission workers.
  • Building partnerships with churches across these states; Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with churches in four states, and efforts are ongoing with the remaining three.
  • Supporting churches and individuals through capacity building, relief and development initiatives, and creating service opportunities for global mission.
  • Serving and equipping churches for mission and mobilisation across the region.

Spiritual Landscape in North East India

India is home to several major religions: approximately 80 per cent of the population is Hindu, 14 per cent Muslim, 0.7 per cent Buddhist, and 2.3 per cent Christian. Though Christianity arrived in India as early as 52 AD, when the Apostle Thomas came to Kerala, Christians remain a small minority nationwide.

In North East India, Christianity has had a more significant impact. It was first introduced to the Khasi-Jaintia foothills in 1813 and reached Sora in 1841. Among the seven North Eastern states, Meghalay is 75 per cent Christian; Nagaland 90 per cent; Mizoram 90 per cent; Assam four per cent; Manipur 45 per cent; Tripura five per cent; and Arunachal Pradesh 31 per cent.

Churches are vibrant and active, with regular Sunday worship, conferences, crusades, seminars, and prayer and fasting programmes.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Mainland India

Despite Christianity’s long history, 95 per cent of India’s population remains unreached. Of 2,279 people groups, 2,048 are classified as unreached.

Within North East India

While some states have large Christian populations, others are still in need of gospel outreach. In Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, more than 50 per cent of the population is yet to be evangelised.

Please pray

  • For good relationships to be built with churches which haven’t yet embraced the call to global mission
  • For SIM NEI to be able to support its workers well, both financially and in prayer
  • For those who don’t yet know Christ in north east India to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ
  • For the vast numbers of people in mainland India who have never heard of Jesus to be reached with the good news by workers sent from around the world
