SIM Ethiopia

Our Ethiopia team has a head office in the capital, Addis Ababa, but seeks to support mission workers as they reach out to  communities across the country with the good news of Jesus, despite the sometimes difficult security challenges.

Key Ministries

  • Bingham Academy
Rooted in Christian values and serving a vibrant multicultural community, Bingham Academy offers a K-12 quality Christian education, with about 40 per cent of pupils from the mission community and 60 per cent from local and other expatriate families.
  • Hidden Abilities
This ministry serves children with disabilities and their families in Bahir Dar through a holistic approach. We provide essential support in our therapy center and children’s homes, ensuring physical therapy continues within a loving and supportive family and community.
  • Trauma Healing
    We partner with
local churches to offer a compassionate, gospel-centred, and mentally-health-informed pathway towards healing. We collaborate closely with the Trauma Healing Institute, using their culturally sensitive ministry model and resources to equip churches to establish and sustain their own trauma healing ministries.
  • Barnabas
This ministry is dedicated to equipping Ethiopian churches through comprehensive training, practical workshops, and strategic outreach support. We aim to empower these congregations to share God’s truth with their Muslim neighbours.
  • New Life Media
With a strategic vision to reach the Somali people for Christ, New Life Media uses satellite TV, engaging social media platforms, and informative websites to create biblically sound and culturally relevant resources, communicating in their mother tongue.
  • Theological Education
This ministry is committed to fostering an equipped and healthy church in Ethiopia, particularly among those who have yet to hear the name of Jesus. Our strategy involves a dual approach: investing in formal institutions to provide in-depth theological training, alongside creating accessible informal discipleship pathways to nurture believers in their daily walk.
  • Media and Publication
This ministry is dedicated to spreading the life-transforming gospel across Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa through a variety of channels, including radio, digital audio distribution and printed literature.
  • Medical
We focus on nurturing the spiritual and professional development of Ethiopian Christian healthcare professionals, including students and junior staff, such as PAACS orthopaedic residents and student fellowship groups at St. Paul’s and Black Lion Hospitals.

Spiritual Landscape in Ethiopia

Located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia boasts a rich tapestry of ancient history and vibrant cultural traditions. Its population, estimated at around 133 million, makes it the second-most populous nation in Africa, with a median age of just 19.

Modern Ethiopia embraces a diverse religious landscape, where traditional indigenous faiths co-exist with Orthodox Christianity, Evangelical Christianity and Islam, creating a nation of varied beliefs living side by side. While the Ethiopian Orthodox Church maintains a significant historical presence, Islam is widely practised, particularly in the east of the country.

Approximately 25.6 per cent of the population belongs to unreached people groups. Despite a strong Christian heritage, tracing back to the early church, a significant opportunity remains for evangelistic outreach. Notably, the younger generation exhibits a profound desire for meaningful and purpose-driven lives, presenting a considerable harvest for those engaged in evangelism and discipleship.

The rise of Islamic movementsis is a challenge for the church. Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions, with 32.6 per cent of the population now identifying as Muslim.

Yet, even amidst these increasing religious influences and their associated challenges, the transformative presence of God remains evident throughout Ethiopia. Testimonies of changed lives and uplifted communities through faith are continually emerging. The message of hope and salvation is being disseminated across all regions, from bustling urban centres to remote rural villages.

We earnestly invite you to join us in heartfelt prayer, asking God to raise dedicated workers who will share this good news with greater reach and passion. Consider the profound impact when more voices proclaim the message of love, redemption, and hope. If you believe you may be called to contribute to this vital mission, we encourage you to reach out to us. Together, we can explore numerous opportunities to make a tangible difference and transform lives.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Children and youth
More than half of all Ethiopians (approximately 117 million people) are under 20. Most of them have limited opportunities to come to know Christ and become his followers.

Vulnerable people
In a primarily rural country, the urban population is now around 20 per cent and growing fast. Poverty and abuse remain major issues, especially among newcomers to urban areas. Girls and homeless street boys are at risk of being trafficked.

Displaced and war-affected people
Over the last several years, Ethiopia has been affected by civil war. Many communities, particularly in the north, are still suffering or are trying to rebuild lives, homes and communities. The food supply is unstable in many areas.

Please pray

  • For churches and church members who have received youth, business or contextualisation
  • For training from SIM ministries to put the lessons into practice for gospel impact
  • For mission decisions and wisdom as travel and ministry, especially outside Addis Ababa, are limited because many areas of the country are unsafe
  • For recruitment of excellent teachers with a passion for making disciples among students and advancing mission outreach at Bingham Academy
  • For a healthy and prayer-led environment in our SIM administrative offices
  • For churches and their leaders to become more willing to show Christ’s love to neighbours, especially those from different ethnic or socio-economic backgrounds
  • For teaching, disciple-making and mentoring initiatives in Orthodox communities
  • For government leaders to have pure motives and serve their communities well
  • For a long-term solution to provide peace and stability throughout Ethiopia and an end to violence and tensions between different regions of the country
  • For a heart for global mission to be born in the Ethiopian church and for local congregations to feel called to support and send global workers
