Phil Bauman was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a home with Christian parents and in a church that is now the Baumans’ commissioning church. He made a profession of faith around the age of 7 and his faith became more personal and real in high school and university.
In 1993, while in the midst of his Civil Engineering studies, Phil spent four months assisting with the expansion and development of Mukinge Hospital in Zambia and it was here that he met Andrea, a nurse, who would become his wife. Five years later, after working for a time in Canada, they began active service with SIM.
In 2000, they arrived to work in northern Ghana and spent their first two and a half years learning the local language, before moving into a ministry of discipleship, leadership development, water development and health education. In 2008, they moved to Accra where Phil’s roles included Business Manager, Deputy Director and then Director. While in Ghana, Phil completed his MA in Theology and Mission from the Akrofi-Christaller Institute.
In 2019, Phil and Andrea left Ghana and Phil took on a virtual role in global strategic development. On 1 March 2024 Phil started in the appointed role of SIM’s new International Director.
Phil is delighted to be married to his best friend, Andrea, who was born and raised in the UK. They currently live in Canada and enjoy being close to their three wonderful adult children – Kieran married to Mackenzie, Liam engaged to Meridith, and Cara. In their free time, they enjoy the outdoors, hiking, biking and just spending time with friends.
