Spiritual Landscape of Zambia

Christianity is by far the largest religion in Zambia, with more than 90 per cent of the population saying they follow Jesus Christ. There are pockets of Islam and Hinduism, mainly in immigrant communities, and some adherence to traditional religions, sometimes mixed with elements of Christianity.

Communities Where Christ is Least Known

Children and young people

Children under 15 comprise 42% of the population, young people 15-24 years comprise 21% of the population. Ministry to children and youth has not always been a church priority. Introducing Sports Ministry and other activities at youth centres and churches provides opportunities to engage and equip them to share Christ with their peers and families.

University students

Most university students have been exposed to Christianity but struggle to understand how Christianity and grow in their walk with God relate to everyday life. They are heavily influenced by secular educators and are exploring new opportunities and ideologies. They need input to become reproducing disciples in the marketplace and community.

Muslim community

The small but influential Muslim population is gaining converts. Most Muslims have not been presented with the claims of Christianity in a context of a relationship with a Christian and in a way that is relevant to them.

Trauma Healing

This ministry is developing, with the vision to have a team of trainers to equip churches and community groups with the skills to help people work through trauma in a way that draws them to the cross of Jesus Christ.

Please pray

  • For wisdom, unity, joy and harmony in the SIM Zambia team
  • For the youth centre staff to have a life of integrity, grow deeper in their faith, and be a light to the community
  • For our health workers – for wisdom, protection, stamina and supplies. Pray for the physical and spiritual needs of their patients
  • For our community development ministry, teaching farmers to grow food for their families and impact their lives spiritually.
  • For our disciple-making and leadership training ministries with local churches, Bible colleges and university campuses to equip and mentor leaders from local churches to disciple others
  • For those ministering to children in schools, churches and community, to help lives to be changed for eternity,
  • For the development of the Trauma Healing training program
  • For more labourers – both long term & short term – to fill the ministry opportunities that we have
