Prayer

Prayer is at the heart of everything we do, in sending and supporting mission workers. It helps us share in the joys and challenges of fellow believers around the world.

‘By Prayer’ is our motto and emphasises our total dependence on God.

We rely on God to soften hearts, provide resources, protect us, and guide us. So, we come before Him regularly, asking for His favour in the places where SIM workers serve. It is only “By Prayer,” that SIM can carry out our ministry and life — it’s central to all we do.

Who do we pray for?

We pray for those who don’t yet know Jesus, asking for breakthroughs in hearts and lives, and for His love to bring real and lasting change. We pray for individuals, families, and whole communities to be transformed by His power, especially in communities where the good news has not been heard. We also lift up our leaders, ministry partners, staff, and mission workers, as well as those we know well, have only met briefly, or simply know by name. As part of the global church, we believe prayer unites us all, no matter where we are.

How do we pray?

We pray as God’s children, knowing He delights in giving us good gifts. As children, our Father has instructed us to pray – so we faithfully obey.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:7-11, NIV)

Although we pray obediently, we also pray boldly, confident that God hears us. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can approach God’s throne with confidence, knowing He listens. (Hebrews 4:16, NIV)

In prayer, we persist, asking God for mercy, courage, deliverance, and so much more.

How often do we pray?

In the spirit of Paul’s words “pray without ceasing,” we seek to be in constant communion with God through prayer. We have specific times for focused prayer throughout the day, month and year.

Each day, we pray for different countries and ministries around the world, following our Prayer Guide. We read about the vision, ministries, and prayer requests of SIM teams, focusing on the least-reached people groups.

We also set aside time 10 days each year, between Ascension Day and Pentecost, to pray and reflect together globally. Additionally, in December, we gather around our Founders’ Day to celebrate and give thanks for God’s faithfulness since SIM first began.

What prayer tools do we use?

Along with our Prayer Guide, we have several resources to help us stay connected to God in prayer. One of these is the SIM By Prayer app, which sends daily prayer requests right to your phone. It includes prayer tracks and Bible verse alerts to remind you of God’s mission to reach people in every nation.
