August 10, 2007
Heavy monsoon flooding has wreaked havoc in South Asia. While monsoon flooding is an annual occurrence in India and Bangladesh, UNICEF reports that the floods this year have been "the worst in living memory." In Bangladesh and India, SIM is supporting the work of its Partners in responding to the devastation with Christ's compassion—bringing clothing, food, medicines, and drinking water to those displaced by the disaster. BangladeshIn Bangladesh, SIM is partnering with OM to distribute relief packets with rice, lentils, and oral saline to 4,400 families in Sirajganj, Manikganj, and Bogra.Additionally, SIM distributed food to 150 families in Faridpur, one of the areas served by the Arsenic Alleviation project. IndiaOfficial reports from India say that nearly 7 million people in 12 districts have been affected by the flooding, and 95 people have lost their lives. SIM's partner, Emmanuel Hospital Association, is leading the disaster response in the East Champaran district of Bihar state, India, one of the worst-affected districts in the State.
Duncan Hospital, an EHA member hospital in Bihar state, was affected by the flooding. Now the staff has been mobilized to provide medicines, food, school supplies, and clothing to those whom they regularly serve through community health programs. Five thousand families will receive food and hygiene kits through the efforts of EHA with SIM's support.
