National Leadership in Medical Missions (99387)
TYPE ALT TEXT HERE

SIM is privileged with an outstanding history of pioneer medical work across the African continent. Whole regions were opened to the Gospel and vibrant churches established through the holistic approach of meeting both spiritual and physical needs. Some of the earliest work involved leprosy and treating eye disease (see photo). Looking ahead to the future, SIM is being called toward an emphasis of discipling and mentoring African medical professionals into missions, and less on performing the medical work ourselves.

In partnership with African and international medical groups and churches, SIM desires to form a long-term strategy that will under gird and invigorate its 65 current health ministries. This strategy will be centered around a vision to develop national medical leadership. SIM longs to see the timeless "tradition" of holistic medical missions reinvented for a future where the African church rises to carry the torch.

This project has already begun and been well-received in two locations. Additional money will enable Dr. Peter Jackson to assess and document medical ministries in Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin. He will use his training to create English and French training modules and to train national medical workers, enabling them to assume leadership roles. He has already identified both African and international agencies to partner with SIM in the vision.

Overall, Dr. Jackson is equipped to capture the roadblocks and possibilities involved in mobilizing nationals for future healthcare ministries. Dr. Jackson comes to us with decades of experience as a physician in both Britain and West Africa. His expertise as a medical doctor, leader, and missionary make him a timely godsend to SIM during these days of fresh vision and strategy crafting.
