Sudan Interior Aid (SIA) is the relief and development arm of our partner church, Sudan Interior Church. SIA has been managing a small initiative partnering with the local church to address the need for micro-enterprise skill development in three proposed locations in Upper Nile state by training these women in the art of tailoring.

With the working-age male figure missing from the household, widows have a particularly difficult hardship in trying to care for their children. This project helps widows in the war affected communities of the Upper Nile region in southern Sudan to develop a self-reliant business in order to generate income for their families. SIM would like to set up a training facility on church land to teach skills that will aid these Sudanese war widows in rebuilding their lives.

In a two-year training SIA will provide instructors to teach sewing, machine maintenance and business skills, and widows will be taught God’s word and many hopefully will make a commitment to Jesus. This initiative has the potential of showing Christian care and strengthening the voice of the church. The believers can show their concern for the weak of the community and make a difference in individual women’s lives.

At the end of the training SIA would like to find a micro-enterprise organization to underwrite their purchase of a sewing machine and launch them into their own business. Some women in a church in the US have already collected beads, scarves and unused jewelry to enable women to start with lovely decorative options. But until funding is available, the training is on hold.

The first basic permanent multi-purpose structure on church property could be erected in October 2010 when the rainy season ends.
