China officially estimates there are 650,000 Chinese infected with HIV. This is only a small percentage of China's billions. However, one UNAIDS official describes the current HIV and sexually transmitted disease situation in China as an AIDS "time bomb." Thousands of Chinese have been innocently infected through contaminated blood banks. In the western provinces of China, heroine and other injected drug abuse threatens to launch an epidemic. The recent visit of our HIV/AIDS specialists to one Chinese city was favorably received by the local government. Our partners are following up by developing excellent AIDS programming, especially among the minorities. China's minority peoples are the most consistently and heavily affected by HIV/AIDS—and millions have never experienced the grace and hope found in Christ. This project provides funds to HOPE for AIDS consultants (based in Thailand) for travel, teaching, and helping partners in Western China and Thailand in developing HIV/AIDS ministries.
