SIMAIR Diesel Plane (97740)

SIMAIR in Niger is an invaluable service to missionaries in West Africa, especially in emergencies. SIMAIR also transports personnel to remote destinations throughout the region, saving hours of time and effort. Niamey, Niger is the only SIMAIR base left in West Africa.

Lately, with the price of oil sky-rocketing and the decreasing availability of avgas (a special blend of gasoline for small planes) in this region, it has become difficult and almost prohibitively expensive to fly smaller planes, like the Saratoga. SIMAIR has been watching the development of diesel engine aircraft for several years. Diesel aircraft engines use jet fuel and are extremely efficient.

Recently, SIMAIR has purchased a 1980 Cessna 182 aircraft. They plan to have it retrofitted with a diesel engine. It will reduce the cost of flying so that the average missionary can afford it.

With this diesel engine plane, SIMAIR would save USD $380 per trip to Galmi Hospital and USD $75,000 per year in fuel alone. The cost to fit the Cessna 182 with the diesel engine is USD $80,000.
