Jimmie and Gloria Johnson arrived in Namibia with a focus on discipling youth. They quickly encountered two big surprises. The first was that the term "youth" in Namibia could mean anyone between the ages of 13 to 45-years-old, and the second was that very few of them had a Bible.
When they first arrived in Rundu, they were greeted by a large number of the youth singing praise songs to the Lord. After several months, the Johnsons started a home Bible study group to develop a closer relationship with them, and also to teach and train them in the Word of God. After several meetings, some of the youths approached them and said, "We don’t know this Jesus that we sing about." This burdened their hearts greatly and they wanted to find a way to truly introduce them to Jesus on a more personal level.
They noticed that many of them did not own Bibles of their own, or if they did, they were old and worn. After visiting several churches out in the surrounding villages, they discovered that the situation of them just singing and having few or no Bibles was the same almost everywhere they went. Later, the Lord placed the "Bibles to the Bush" project on Jimmie's heart and he began praying for a way to effectively introduce this project to the various churches and individuals that needed it. Jimmie and Gloria believe that their call was to first of all introduce the youth to "this Jesus who we sing about," and then give them the Word of God so that they are able to grow into mature Christ-followers.
The "Bibles to the Bush" project is allowing a large number of Namibians to have access to the Word of God, the Bible, for the first time ever! "I have dreamed of having my own Bible for a long time!" exclaimed one college-aged young woman who received her first Bible through the project.
The Bibles are now available in five local languages and four different English versions. If you would like to take part in putting more Bibles into the hands of people who are genuinely excited to receive it, please click on the donate button.
