Awanno is approximately 300 km southwest of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia among settled agriculturists who are mainly Muslims. A busy health station provides the base for outreach through EPI (immunization), health education, and work with villages. The government program has trained seven community health workers and nine traditional birth attendants who are now active in the area. The health program provides a good evangelistic tool for outreach to the Muslim community.

The Awanno Health Program consists of a curative health facility and preventive community health program that includes clean water. Recently the community component of the program has been strengthened to include training community health educators and anti-AIDS clubs in the seven local schools. SIM is planning to renew the government agreement for a period of three years to continue the curative base and preventive health measures. This will allow SIM to continue outreach to the local Muslims and strengthen the small church in the area.
