Uncertainty for Zimbabwe After Presidential Elections
24 April 2008

Two hands held together in prayer

According to the British website ekklesia.com, the Anglican church in Zimbabwe is calling Christians to a day of prayer on Sunday April 27 for the "critical situation" in their country.

Making the call, Rev Bob Stumbles, Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Harare, described Zimbabwe as "a nation in dire distress and teetering on the brink of human disaster."

"It needs to be rescued from violence, the concealing and juggling of election results, deceit, oppression and corruption, to bring about righteousness, joy, peace, compassion, honesty, justice, democracy and freedom from fear and want," the chancellor said.

Pray

  • for a fair and just resolution to the election results.
  • that violence would not spread.
  • for an end to corruption and oppression.
  • for the Church to continue to stand strong, and to be faithful to minister to those around them during this time

Ten days after ballots were cast, the people of Zimbabwe are still waiting for official presidential election results. The opposition party has won a majority in the parliament, and they have declared victory in the presidential voting. However, no official tallies have been presented, and now reports of violence are coming from the country.

Pray

  • for a fair result to the elections to be announced quickly.
  • for violence to end.
  • for God to use his people to be instruments of peace in this turbulent time.

28 March 2008

Once an exporter of food, today, Zimbabwe is a recipient of food aid. The economy is in crisis, with the highest inflation rate in the world at over 100,000% per year. President Robert Mugabe is facing the strongest opposition in his 28-year presidency in national elections tomorrow.

Pray

  • for peaceful and fair elections.
  • for God to provide for the hungry people of Zimbabwe.
  • for wisdom for ministries in Zimbabwe who are facing incredible challenges in the face of strong inflation.
  • for the church in Zimbabwe to stand firm in their faith and trust God despite the harsh circumstances, and that they would be faithful to minister to those around them who are facing great difficulties.
