Three Million People Affected by Flooding in Bihar State, India
9 September 2008

  flooding in Bihar state

Over three million people have been displaced by severe flooding in India. The Kosi river overflowed its banks after heavy monsoon rains, leaving millions in Bihar state, the poorest region of India, homeless.

Emmanuel Hospital Association, an SIM partner, is on the ground in Bihar providing flood relief to the suffering:

  • Providing food packets;
  • Setting up community kitchens; and
  • Conducting health surveys and organizing care for the sick.

EHA’s Madhipura Hospital in Bihar has been damaged by the flooding. Staff housing is under water. Electronic equipment has been moved to higher levels as much as possible. Many of the staff have been evacuated, but a small team has stayed back to help with the relief work.

Pray

  • for the safety of EHA’s relief team.
  • for volunteers who are traveling to Bihar in response to the relief operations.
  • that more skilled volunteers would join the team.
  • for the safety of the huge stock of relief material at Saharsha and Madhipura.
  • for more doctors and community nurses to join the medical relief team.

Follow the progress of relief efforts on EHA’s website.
