SIM Liberia: Five Years After the War
by Christina Holder, Liberia
2 September 2008 The small West African nation of Liberia endured a brutal 14-year civil war that resulted in the deaths of more than 200,000 people and left the country's infrastructure completely destroyed. Today, five years after the war's end, so much still stands in the way of a restored Liberia. The country's power grid is mostly defunct. Only 25% of the country has access to running water. Crime is high, literacy is low, and corruption is rampant. Sadly, most Liberians have not healed from the emotional scars of so many years of war.
But in the midst of all the obstacles, a faithful God is at work. Throughout the war, SIM's missionaries stood with the Liberian people --encouraging them, mentoring them, praying with them. After the war, SIM missionaries returned to help Liberians move forward. Today they are helping the Liberian people grow into the future leaders of their war-torn land. The past five years have been difficult. Liberia is a country of ruins, and every sector of society is in the process of being rebuilt. SIM Liberia needs partners to help sustain its efforts to raise up Christ-centered, Liberian leaders—people like Joe Wankollie, Paté Chon and Moses Nyantee. These Liberians already are helping to influence and raise up other leaders so that one day, this post-war country will rest completely in the hands of its people. Read the stories of Joe, Paté and Moses. Learn about their personal journeys from the darkness of war into the light of a life shaped by Christ. PrayPlease pray about how you can partner with these faithful Liberians. You can be part of God's work to bring hope and healing to an entire nation torn apart by war.
