18 August 2007A man looks over the rubble left after an 8.0 earthquake on August 15.

On August 15, a powerful earthquake struck the coast of Peru, about 165 miles south of Lima. Over 300 people have died, according to official reports.

The worst of the damage, deaths, and injuries occurred in the province of Ica, especially the coastal towns of Chincha, Pisco, and Ica. Lima itself did not suffer too much damage.

"All our SIM missionaries in Lima are fine, and our missionaries in other parts of the country, while feeling the tremor, are not affected," Helen Heron, director for SIM Peru, reported. "SIM does not have any work in the affected province, but in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Christ who will be undergoing a very difficult time, we will support them in prayer."

Please pray

  • for the rescue operations, hampered by the main Pan-American highway being badly damaged.
  • for adequate shelter, food, water, and medicines for the affected peoples.
  • for the long-term rebuilding that will be needed.
  • that the churches will be able to reach out to their communities, and that churches in Lima and other big cities will be mobilized to help their brothers and sisters in need.
