Miracle for Meteku
by Meryl Ashworth, Ethiopia
1 June 2005

“I can’t stay here in this house. It keeps haunting me. I have to move!” Meteku, age 15, was almost desperate as he pleaded with Sofi, the coordinator of the SIM Urban Ministry Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Meteku had endured a very traumatic childhood. With no father around, he and his younger brother had looked after their mother and sister until they both succumbed to AIDS and died in Meteku’s arms when he was 11 years old. He became hard, angry, cynical and aggressive. He joined a gang, and they terrorized the community.

One day he and some gang friends became involved in a Bible study run by Urban Ministries, and they started going to church. After a lot of counseling and discussion, he accepted Christ, along with a friend. Three of our social workers visited his house a number of times and prayed for him. He had been demon-possessed, and through this praying he was freed from spiritual bondage. “I’ve never seen such a transformation,” Sofi exclaimed. “He never used to smile; he was always aggressive and scowling. Now he has a big grin all over his face!”

He did move out of that house that was so full of horrific memories. Now he’s looking forward to his future, and he’s beginning to make restitution for wrong things he did. We can add Meteku’s name to the long list of troubled people whose lives have been changed by God through SIM’s ministry to children and youth in Addis Ababa. Please pray that he will continue to walk with the Lord and grow spiritually.
