Men Wanted!!
by Chandra Smith and Amanda King
11 March 2010
When we are asked what the biggest need on the mission field is today, the unquestionable answer is just what Jesus said: the laborers are few! When asked specifically about the greatest need in our area of Loja Province in Ecuador, our immediate response is MEN! We need Christian men who are strong in their faith. Why is this the number one need of the work in our beloved small town and the surrounding communities? Quite frankly, it is because we are two single women. Yes you read that right, but before you get the wrong idea, let us explain. Other than the occasional outside help, it is only the two of us working to establish Christ’s church in this area. This task evades us as it is virtually impossible for us to reach the men of these communities with the truth of the Gospel.
Why? Culturally, women run the family. This has had a devastating effect on how Ecuadorian men view themselves and their role as men in both the family and society. God created them to be the leaders and so they battle against their own culture, tradition, and upbringing. Many have given up the fight and lost their self-respect in the process. You will hear the men say, religion is for women. How can this idea be broken and not have its toll on the church here when there are no Christian men in the community? How can a man show interest in knowing Christ when religion is considered to be for women only? If one should accept the Lord, how can he grow spiritually, resist temptation and be a testimony to others when he is alone in the battle. To grow a strong church, males are needed. To make a change in the community, males are needed. To reach these males, evangelism and consistent daily discipleship, by Christian males, are needed. As women, we cannot provide all that these males need.
We have seen firsthand the difference a godly Christian male influence makes. We know two male believers. One has had the influence of a few Christian males in his life since becoming a believer. The other has had very little of such influence and what he has had has been inconsistent. The first is growing strong in his faith, he is making changes in his life which are evidence of this growth, and his life is bearing fruit. The second is constantly struggling, has not shown much evidence of growth, his life is going downhill and is not bearing good fruit. We are convinced that the second would be much stronger in his faith and that his life would bear evidence of his faith if he had had the benefit of a consistent godly male influence in his Christian walk. We need men who can:
Reaching men here with the Gospel is not an easy task. It requires men of strong character, faith, and determination. God can use any skill, ability and talent you have for His glory, BUT only if you are willing to let Him. So our question is—are you? It will be an uphill battle, but the reward is worth it. The Lord IS calling you to serve Him. The only question is where; if you don’t know, please consider Gonzanamá, Ecuador. We would be happy to have you on our team. If you have a wife, bring her along; if not, come anyway! GoCould you be who they need?
