Memorial Health Care Center Invests in People

Rebuilding Southern Sudan: Church and Nation is being done in different ways—but always with the goal of investing in people. Barb Hartwig has recently graduated another class of Community Health Workers (CHWs), who qualify to lead Sudan’s Ministry of Health Primary Health Care Units. They now have portable understanding and skills to serve their own people. But this is not simply an academic program. Students are taken out to do community health work and get experience in a higher level Health Centre. Sandy Ewan, clinic coordinator, reports: “Last year, I had been developing an internship programme for our new Community Health Workers, who were to begin work with us in Feb 2010. I finished this in January, and Dr. Rob interviewed and hired five graduates from our CHW School. What a blessing they have been in their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn! Also, the blessing of mentoring these young men is truly a gift from the Lord. Since there are five of them, I have them on a rotation working in the clinic, as well as doing community health work. Because donors shared I have bought two bicycles to do this work. I hope to begin a refresher course to be held every Thursday afternoon in which I hope to do some Bible teaching as well. This is the last step that needs to be implemented in this Internship programme. At the end of 10 months, we will then place these young men in their own clinics to help & minister to their own people. Along with all of this, I have begun daily devotions with these CHWs. We are reading through the Book of Matthew and praying together. Following this, we continue to pray with the people waiting to be seen before we begin our regular clinic work. When the CHWs go out to do community health work, they give a Bible story with the Gospel. How wonderful!! God has been good to me, as I have three missionary nurses who are overseeing these CHWs and mentoring them in their work. Please pray that we will be a spiritual encouragement to these CHWs and that the Lord will use this to deepen their faith, strengthen the church and to spread the Gospel further.” Get InvolvedYou can help support this important ministry through your donation to the Memorial Health Care Center and Training School or by joining the team in South Sudan—check out the opportunities to serve.
