I Said Yes
by Myriam Trott, Angola
8 May 2006

Doing a radio program came as a surprise to me. We just completed our first year of ministry in Moxico province, Eastern Angola, and we weren't planning on getting involved in radio. My husband is a pastor and is training workers and helping plant an urban church. I am a physician working in an evangelical clinic. I also work with women's ministries and the children's program at our church.

The director of a radio program called "Women's Space" approached me to see if I could share a few words and tips with her listening audience. She said it could be about medicine, about women's issues, or about my experience as a Christian woman. She gave me the freedom to choose the topics for a 10-15 minute segment.

From my growing knowledge about the culture and the needs of the Angolan woman, I recorded five programs. The topics were: self-esteem, anger, basic needs of the child (two parts), and worry. For each topic, in addition to the psychological/medical part, I always offered a spiritual aspect and a biblical perspective.

The state-controlled radio station I am on is the only one in the province. I don't know how powerful its signal is or how many listeners it has. I have heard that the program was well received and that the topics had never been addressed on that program.

God placed a huge opportunity before us, and as far as we are able we will take advantage of it. Our desire is that we might be able to use this program, and perhaps others as God opens doors, to sensitize and educate the public about the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
