Hope in Their Eyes
by Joan Smith, Ethiopia

An Arsi girl

Children in SIM's Langano School have a light in their eyes that is fueled by the newness of each day and the anticipation of the moment. This school serves the children of the mostly Muslim Arsi people. For many of the students, this will be their only opportunity to hear the Gospel. Hard living will soon wear these young ones down. They need not only education, but the light that comes from knowing Jesus and having his hope.

At Langano Elementary School, talented and creative teachers work with limited resources. The students are eager to learn and receive their efforts with enthusiasm. Teacher Joan Smith tells how she taught measurement without a ruler:

"One day I was in a classroom as the instructor was teaching linear measurement. He was describing meters, decimeters and centimeters, but there was not a measuring instrument in sight. So the next time that I taught English to that class, I brought several paper meter tapes that had been created by pasting strips of paper together and marked off in centimeters. As we practiced English sentences that used the words "longer, shorter, and bigger," we also measured students' wrists, their heads, their arms and their hands with these rough and ready tape measures. Then we weighed items on a fulcrum scale made from tin cans, wooden slats and yogurt cups. These activities that would have been passé for other classes that I've taught were greeted with delight and excitement and the desire to be part of the activity.

Pray

Please pray for the students and teachers at Langano, that many students' lives will be changed as they gain a Christian education. Pray that God will grow strong believers and church leaders from these energetic children.
