Faith Comes By Hearing—Romans 10:13-17
by Jeff and Amy McKissick
20 January 2009 The Lord has richly provided our SIM church planting teams with 100 “oral New Testaments” which use SD card readers, rechargeable batteries, and a powerful speaker, all compactly arranged in a waist pack. Realizing that the vast majority of rural Paraguayans are either illiterate or functionally illiterate and secondary oral learners, we are taking God’s Word to them in a format they can easily access.
The waist pack is the ideal instrument as it can be carried anywhere and any time. A rural farmer who spends all day in his fields can listen while he works. A woman busy at chores around the house can strap on the waist pack and listen while she washes clothes. At night, the pack can be placed on a table and the family can gather around to hear God’s Word. I gave a waist pack with an SD chip containing the gospel of John to one of my patients. He listened to the entire book four times in one week! He could tell me by chapter what the Gospel of John was about. Even better, God’s Word is producing a change in his life. His sister, another patient of mine, told me that Francisco is a different man now! He is more kind to his wife, treats his family more lovingly, and even preaches God’s word to his family and friends! Our vision is to get as many units as possible into as many families as possible—that people would rediscover the power found in God’s word to change our lives. We are also working on writing and recording Bible studies (voices done by local believers), done in a culturally appropriate, easily reproducible, story-based formats for use in the rural areas. These will be simple and effective tools in the hands of local church leaders and people like Francisco—people who will be key instruments in the spread of God’s church to surrounding communities.
