ELWA Compound Struck by Lightning
18 June 2007

On Thursday night June 13, lightning hit the Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) compound in Monrovia, Liberia. ELWA is one of SIM's ministry partners in Liberia.

The lightning destroyed two panel boxes and a power meter which supply the radio station and damaged the generator switching system at the power-house. The ELWA Hospital back-up generator and some of appliances were also hit.

ELWA General Manager James S. Kesselly reports that parts of the radio transmitter and control board were also destroyed. "Our technicians are still conducting their assessment so as to determine the level of destruction."

This lightning strike comes just after the debut of programming in the Liberian languages on the FM band on Monday, June 12, 2007. Prior to that date, the Liberian language programs had been off the air for about a year.

Please pray:

  • that the staff will be able to identify damaged parts and spot any potential danger to the equipment.
  • for repairs to be made quickly to restore ELWA's ministries.
  • for the Liberian language radio programs to be able to return to the air quickly.
  • for God to use ELWA for his glory in Liberia.
