If you were a child in Sweden, would you have the faith to imagine that you could help another child a continent away? A group of Swedish children certainly believed they could.
These Sunday School children, ages 8 to 11 years old, became challenged by news of the October earthquake. They wanted to send a donation to the victims to help in some way and to share God's love with people in need. So, one Sunday, they held a fika, or refreshment sale, after the church service.
The group worked really hard together, displaying pictures and information about the earthquake, including a letter from SIM requesting partners to join the relief effort. They were very enthusiastic and that day attendance at the church for the first time reached more than 50 people. In fact, they began to worry that they would run out of sandwiches!
By the end of the event, they managed to raise 3375 Swedish Krona (GBP £250). They have now sent $125 to the SIM and $125 to the Leprosy Mission which they had learned about through Scripture Union teaching material.
These children believed that the distances of geography, language, culture and religion were not big enough to separate them from the tragedy. Their enthusiasm and Christ-like compassion remain an example to us all!
