Bolivian Referendum Vote on August 10
8 August 2008

  Bolivian man in prayer

Sunday, August 10 is a national recall election in Bolvia that will put President Evo Morales and eight of the state governors up for a vote of no confidence. Political tensions are very high as this is a key election in the political battle.

SIM missionary Dale Harlan writes, “many people are quite concerned with the threat of widespread violence depending on the election results. Would you please pray with us for peace and calm to prevail during and in the aftermath of the election?”

On election days in Bolivia, no vehicles (except for emergency vehicles) are allowed to be on the streets, no groups of greater than ten are permitted to meet for any reason (there will be no church services on Sunday, election day), all alcohol sales are prohibited the evening before through the day after, and every adult citizen must cast a ballot by law or face a stiff fine.

Pray

  • for peace and calm through out the nation
  • for safety for the 95 SIM adults and children in the country.
  • for peace of mind especially for newer missionaries who have not yet had experience with this sort of political unrest.
  • for wisdom and spiritual strength for church leaders -- with congregations on both sides of the political divide.
  • for an election outcome that would deflate the acute political tensions.
