A "Seeing Eye Donkey?"
by Ann Wheeler, SIM Bolivia
4 May 2009
Antonio lives high in the Andean mountains of Bolivia in primitive, isolated conditions. He gradually lost his eyesight 5 years ago. He doesn’t know why. He doesn’t have a seeing eye dog to help him walk the dangerous mountain trails from his home in Payrumani, Potosi to other communities, but he does have a "seeing eye donkey." Antonio is a Christian and believes that his donkey is a gift from the Lord. It enables him to move about the area where he lives, attend church meetings and visit friends. When Juan Carlos Condori first met Antonio, he didn’t believe his story. But when Juan Carlos, who works with Radio Mosoj Chaski Ministries, last visited the area, Antonio arrived alone. He and his donkey had traveled for 2 hours along treacherous mountain trails. Antonio says his “seeing eye donkey” rarely takes him to the wrong place. He tells the donkey where they are going and it takes him there. Antonio’s daughter reads the Bible to him, and he regularly listens to Mosoj Chaski Radio, a short-wave Quechua Christian radio station. Through the radio programs and music, he gets regular teaching and encouragement. Antonio is also participating in the Quechua Pastors’ Book Set training course, with his daughter’s help, which is how SIM came to hear of him. Mosoj Chaski Radio celebrated 10 years of broadcasting on April 12 this year. God has been faithful, providing the staff and finances needed to produce programs for the 8 hours it is on air each day. In the past decade this work has expanded, and now includes other strategic ministries to help the Quechuas of Bolivia hear the Gospel and grow in their knowledge of the Lord.
