The Student Evangelistic Center in Niamey, Niger, is making an impact at Niger's only public university. The two goals for the center, as announced publicly to the community at its opening are:
- to witness Christian love by offering students resources to help them in their university studies, and
- to witness Christian faith by offering students a resource center on the Christian faith.
Even though the university setting is almost completely Muslim, the center has been well received. Director James Morgan says, "I have never seen such a busy student center anywhere: we have around 80 to 120 students per day, and we don't even offer food or snacks!"
A Source for Academic and Christian Resources
Since its opening, more than 1,000 students have become paying members (USD $2.00 per year), and most of them have learned how to use the computer in the center. They have used the computers to write their Bachelor's papers and Master's theses.
In addition to computers, the center offers two libraries, one academic, and one with Christian resources. Because libraries are rare in Niger and the university's is not well stocked, these are a valuable resource for the students who also enjoy reading local newspapers and magazines on the terrace. The center's English classes are popular, too.
On Friday evenings, the center offers special activities such as lectures on the Christian faith or topics of general interest, movies, games, and concerts.
Pray
Your prayers for this ministry will make a difference. Please pray for God to meet the financial needs of the student center and for the leadership as they seek to be more financially independent. Finally, pray for the students who visit the center to be changed by the love of Christ.
Give
Because Niger is the poorest country in the world (UN Index 2006), and the church in Niamey is small with limited resources, this strategic project is still almost completely dependent on foreign financial support.
You can demonstrate the love of Christ to Niger's future leaders through your investment in this project. One month's rent is approximately USD $200. For USD $32, you can purchase one month's periodicals, or for $60, you can add two books to the academic library. Thank you for your partnership in this project!
