HIV/AIDS has brought misery and death to thousands in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the largest city in the Horn of Africa. The Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC), in partnership with SIM, is now making a huge impact in this city of more than 4 million, both in caring for those affected and in helping to prevent new infections.

Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) PLUS…

The Medan (Saving this Generation) Center provides counseling and testing for HIV, the first step in a multi-faceted approach to helping to meet each individual’s needs. The center also facilitates:

  • Anti-AIDS Youth Clubs which focus on behavioral change
  • Community based home care for people living with AIDS
  • A clinic for AIDS patients
  • Care of orphans and other vulnerable children
  • Advocacy for at-risk members of society
  • Income-generating activities to help people impoverished by HIV/AIDS

Preventing Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT)

Thousands of children live on the streets of Addis Ababa, and many of them are dying of AIDS which they got at birth from their infected mothers, even though prevention is relatively easy. Thanks to the efforts of Christians in France and elsewhere, SIM and the EKHC now have medicines, test kits, and start-up finances to include PMTCT programs at the Medan Centers. Thanks to the good reputation of the EKHC AIDS ministries, the Addis Ababa Health Bureau asked them to provide training and management of PMTCT for the entire city. (from Tim Teusink)

Please pray

That the Medan Center will fulfill God’s purpose for it in stopping the spread of AIDS.
