"Free" Taxi Rides
by Pastor Clement Joseph, Project Positive Ray Program Director
24 August 2009
Through our education and awareness programs at schools, we are able to interact with young people around HIV&AIDS issues. Often, the information we share is not taken seriously. Young people laugh at and ridicule what we have to say. Edmara, a community worker with Project Positive Ray, is not intimidated and perseveres. She has been with the project for the past seven years. With her ears to the ground in one school, she learned that young people are accepting free taxi rides in exchange for sex. The school is alarmed at the high pregnancy rate. Edmara, motivated by what she hears, accepts the challenge and continues with her work. Young people see her dedication and commitment to help. They are now talking to her. She is able to counsel individuals and interact with groups. After two years of persistent work the pregnancy rate in this school dropped from 17 in one year to only four the following year. Pray
