Vulnerable Children Receive Memory Books
28 April 2011

SIM's HOPE for AIDS staff recognizes how important it is for orphaned and vulnerable children to know their origins and who their families are. Without such basic knowledge, any child will grow up feeling profoundly lost and displaced, which impacts the formation of their identity. A project in Zimbabwe has become a powerful tool to help children become grounded in their personal histories. Mums and Dads living with AIDS take time to record their family history and their personal stories for each of their children to keep forever.

HOPE for AIDS provides materials such as exercise books. Together the parents write their stories with their children. They also develop “trees of life” in which they trace their backgrounds so that in the event of death, the children know full well their relatives and backgrounds. They also include photos of highlights in their lives, such as weddings and other events.

Though the worth of such books is incalculable, the materials themselves are inexpensive. An exercise book costs about 30 cents, photos are 50 cents each, and the same for a pen. They also need glue to stick the photos, covers and colour pencils. US$5 is enough for one child to have a personal memory book. Our clients have an average of 3 children.

It is hard to imagine anything with a cost so trifling, yet with the power to so fundamentally impact the psychological security of a child, not to mention the comfort given to parents living with AIDS. Even the memory of creating the book together is itself a precious gift for each family.

Please take a moment to pray for children and parents creating these books today. Pray Jeremiah 29:11 which says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

If you would like to sponsor memory books, please contact your nearest SIM office and specify your gift for #96381. This project also covers training sessions which require food and bus fares (each training for memory books costs US$200), as well as other Home-Based Care initiatives.
