Join the Water Festival!
16 May 2011

IMAGINE AN ENTIRE CITY DESCENDING INTO A SIX-DAY-LONG, ALL-OUT BRAWL. The ammunition? Water. The teams? Every man, woman, and child for themselves. The goal? Get as soaked as possible!

The Songkran festival of Thailand is celebrated each April as their New Year. Traditionally Songkran was a time to pay respects to elders and visit Buddhist monasteries to pray and offer food. However, the emphasis today is more on just having fun by pelting everyone with massive quantities of refreshing H2O. Temperatures can soar over 100 F (40 C) on some April days, so the youth douse both friends and strangers as a way to relieve the heat.

Water Gun
The most famous celebrations occur in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where this water-fête can last for six days. Locals roam the streets with water guns, squirt gear, buckets, hoses, and any other container that will hold or propel water. People in vehicles are no drier than people on foot; those on motorbike, bicycle, tuk tuk, or back of a truck can fully expect a drenching.

So you might be asking, what do water fights and festivals have to do with mission?

Well, SIM needs more workers to serve in Thailand! We have many openings, some of them quite urgent. We ask you to prayerfully consider if God might be inviting you to serve with us.

SIM partners with two schools in the city of Chiang Mai, Grace International School and Chiang Mai International School. Many staff and teacher posts are now vacant for the 2011-2012 school year.

In addition to these schools, many more opportunities exist to serve the Thai people. We have urgent opportunities available to serve in sports ministry, HIV/AIDS ministry, videography/web design/media and general communications, office support roles, and in leadership. Please take a moment to view our full list: Openings in Thailand.

Jesus once told a woman by a well in ancient Samaria, “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Imagine how fun it would be to roam the streets of the world’s cities and drench everyone in Living Water! Picture the sheer joy of crowds spilling onto sidewalks, boulevards and parks, their hearts full and running over with springs of water that well up to eternal life.
