Jesus Was Different

Vikram* is a 36-year-old English teacher who lives a couple miles away from us. He and his wife also develop passport photos, which are used for proof of identity. Over the past year, I had stopped a few times at their place for photos and had brief conversations with them.

As I was leaving one day, I gave Vikram a DVD about Jesus that we distribute to people here. As I was explaining about the movie to him, he told me that he had seen "The Passion of the Christ" on TV one month earlier. He was so touched to learn that there is a God who would suffer so much for the sins of mankind. All the gods he had ever known exist to be served, not to serve. Jesus was different.

He wanted to learn more about Jesus, but didn’t know how. When I gave him the DVD, he knew immediately that it was no coincidence … Jesus was pursuing him. He eagerly invited us to come back and tell him more about Jesus.

Vikram needed no proof to believe in Jesus and repent of his sins. He began to read the Bible and was utterly amazed that the Bible holds answers to all of life's questions. All of his religious books combined did not speak to him like the Bible did. Jesus was different. The Bible was different. And now Vikram is different.

We continued to meet with him regularly teaching him from Scripture. We shared the meaning of baptism with him, and he came the next day asking when he could obey this commandment of his Lord. The following day, Vikram was baptized. That evening, he shared in our house church how thankful he was for the new life Jesus had given him.

Pray for Vikram and his family. One of the pastors has given him the nickname "John the Baptist" for his boldness in sharing truth with everyone he knows. Pray for his wife and extended family to embrace Jesus as well. Also pray for the impact he has on his students as a teacher. He continually shares with his students and brings them to learn more about the truth.

For Vikram and others who are boldly speaking God's truth—that God will protect them from Satan’s attacks.
For the other young men and women being discipled, that God will give them resolve in their decision to follow Jesus and his commands.
For Lon and his family—that God may strengthen them so they might be a source of encouragement and strength for the growth of God’s kingdom in South Asia.
