Fragrance of Life Amidst Tragedy
by A team member in South Asia
28 January 2005

The brother of our friend, Sui, decided to go to Phuket, Thailand, for a holiday with his family. For three nights in succession, the brother had horrible dreams of his family lying belly-up on the shore. He was deeply troubled but kept it to himself.

On Sunday morning, December 26, the family planned to enjoy the beach as always. But the mother had a strong and compelling feeling that she should gather the family together for prayers. "Why, Lord?" she argued. "This is our holiday and we go to church the rest of the year!" The children were not too thrilled either with this curtailment of seashore activity.

By 9:30 a.m., they were gathered together in their hotel room. Within 20 minutes, the 30 metre high waves heaved themselves on the nearby shore. Sui's brother was dumbfounded and shared his dreams. He felt rebuked for not having listened to God speak to him. But thanks to God, his wife had listened and obeyed, and their family's lives were saved.

We thank God for sparing this family, and we ask for comfort and hope for other families who are grieving deeply. In 2 Corinthians 2:14, the Bible says . . . we spread everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus. In times of tragedy like this, as we lift our prayers and give aid in the name of Jesus, we become a fragrance of life.

May we all be a sweet "fragrance of life" today!
