Dreaming New Dreams

How would you feel about your life if you were one of the thousands of young girls growing up in a crowded slum in Nairobi, Kenya? Hopeless or determined? Helpless or empowered? What might be your greatest frustrations? Your biggest temptations? Your highest dreams?

Ruth Omungo, who heads Dorcas Ministry for pastors’ wives in these informal communities, has turned her burden for secondary school girls into a program called Chombo Kiteule, or “vessels of honor.” Paul urged Christians of his day to “possess his vessel in sanctification and honor” (KJV). Or in modern words, “God wants each of you to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable.” (1 Thess. 4:4)

Girls invited to the program have been nominated by a church or youth organization. During each 4-day Chombo Kiteule, they dig deep into topics that reach exactly to where they live and what they’re thinking about: “Setting Life Goals,” “Using my Free Time Constructively,” “Getting Along with my Parents,” “Drugs and Me,” “God’s Purpose for my Life,” “Relating to Boys—Knowing my Freedoms and Limits” and “How to Pass my Exams.”

Delighted by the loving attention, they return home with new insights and sense of direction: “I am special to God.” “God cares about what my life will become.” Ruth assigns mature women from Dorcas Ministries to be on-going mentors so each girl can learn from an adult role model.

Pray

Please pray for Ruth, her helpers, and the girls as Chombo Kiteule begins again in 2010.

Give

Your contribution of $45 to Dorcas Ministries of Nairobi will provide all the expenses for one girl to participate for a year in this vital ministry. Who knows what God will do with the life of one young lady who becomes a “vessel of honor”?

Thank you for partnering with SIM to bring hope to the nations!
